Late night food hunt in Hanoi

Do you arrive in Hanoi at 11pm, or just simply hungry at night? Your stomach is growling for food and you think “But it’s almost midnight already, where to grab some delicious dishes?”. That’s why this blog was written especially for you – the one who’s starving and tired. It will walk you through some of the late night food in Hanoi that you might want to try and get your stomach filled with. After eating you will feel blessed for how good your food was.

1. Xofa Café & Bistro

  • Add: 14 Tong Duy Tan, Hoan Kiem, Hanoi.
  • Open hour: 24/7

Xofa Café & Bistro

The first destination is actually not a place for eating, but somewhat for refreshments. Xofa is open 24/7, so no matter when you come here, you will be served with good coffee and snacks, boosting your mood with its calm atmosphere. Choose a seat that you can wiggle around with your laptop or a seat that makes you feel comfortable and enjoy your drinks.

2. Crab noodle soup

  • Address: 23 Hong Phuc, Nguyen Trung Truc, Ba Dinh, Hanoi.
  • Open hour: 15:00 – 23:59
  • Price range: 20.000 – 50.000 VND

Crab noodle soup

This is a special food for the youth in Hanoi. Its Vietnamese name is “bun rieu cua”. You can eat this in any meal of the day, either in the restaurant or on the side of the street. But when it comes to midnight, the place is crowded with guests coming in. The staff will invite you in to sit on a small stool, next to a little bit higher chair to place your bowl of noodles. It is quite unique compared to using a table, but it’s delicious and the owners are very friendly and caring. The soup is sour and spicy, but not too spicy, full of toppings like crab, beef, fresh herbs and veggies, combined together to make a noodle bowl that makes you want to have a bigger belly to have another one. It’s open until midnight, so make sure you check your time before going.

3. Hot pot street Phung Hung

  • Address: Phung Hung St., Hoan Kiem, Ha Noi
  • Open hour: 9PM – 5AM

Phung Hung is one of the most crowded streets in Hanoi because this street is called by Vietnamese as “hot pot street”. It’s always crowded with various options for you to choose from; usually these hot pot vendors are opened until 3 to 5 AM. You are wondering how they can be crowded at that hour in the night? The truth is that’s the rush hour of this night street.

As there are many vendors, you can enjoy as many types of hot pot soups as you like, from chicken hot pot to beef hot pot, … not to mention drinks and refreshments at a decent price. This place is super famous for the youth so you can see many young people come here at night. Maybe you can make new friends while enjoying hot pot at this place.

4. Stir-fried “pho” Bát Đàn St.

  • Address: 45B – Bat Dan – Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi
  • Open hour: 8PM to 1.30AM
  • Price range: 35.000 – 45.000 VND

Stir-fried “pho” Bát Đàn St.

Pho is a traditional dish for Vietnamese, they are used in eating with soup. But at Bat Dan St. they are stir-fried. Famous, hot and delicious, this dish doesn’t go dry and is really soft. Usually it’s eaten with stir-fried beef and some veggies too. So definitely give this street food a try.

5. Porridge with ribs

  • Address: 14 Dong Xuan, Hoan Kiem District, Hanoi
  • Open hour: 06:00 PM – 2:00 AM

Porridge with ribs

Porridge with ribs might not be the most famous dish in town. However, it is one of the most favored breakfast options for the locals. This simple dish is the number one cure for the midnight hunger. It is no surprise that people gather around a little stall on the street of Dong Xuan market after midnight. The street food store is open until 2 A.M.

And here comes the best part. It’s 3 AM already and you still want some food. Maybe because of your jet lag that makes you unable to sleep. Or you ran out of options because honestly, no food stalls open this late in the night. What I have here is the famous “Banh mi dan to” – a food that especially sells from 3AM.

6. Bánh Mì Dân Tổ

  • Address: Ngã Ba Cao Thắng – Trần Nhật Duật, Quận Hoàn Kiếm, Hà Nội
  • Opening hour: 03:00 – 08:00
  • Price range: 20.000 – 50.000 VND

Banh mi dan to

“Banh mi dan to” is famous for the hungry night owls who seek good food. I personally rate this is the greatest “banh mi” of all time. They are always crowded, even in the middle of the night. “I’m hungry and I want it now!” some might think. Don’t worry, the food will come right to you, as it is also served very fast. Just get a number and wait in line, but remember, this is a super crowded place so no matter how fast it is, be patient. A perfect late night food is on the way.

The ingredients are chosen carefully and made daily so you don’t have to worry about the quality of the “banh mi”. The owner and her husband are the one who prepares your “banh mi” and serves it with veggies for you.

And you are wondering “Why does it have this special name?”. “Dan to” means a racing boy, and 3 AM is when they start racing on the streets. But don’t worry, there won’t be any race that comes out of nowhere when you are enjoying your food. After you have your banh mi, sit down on the street with your drinks and feel the fresh air early in the morning.

That just wraps up the midnight food hunt. Hope this helps you find the options to choose, either early midnight or past midnight. Remember, no matter when you get out to find food, there’s still an option for you to try in Hanoi.
